About RunningJE
Jersey is a wonderful place to run, but it's hard to find good routes that tell you how hilly they are, how fit you need to be, and where to stop for a coffee. So we made them.
Designed by qualified fitness instructors
Every route is designed, run and graded by a qualified fitness instructor before we call it reviewed. They check the distance, the climbs, the surface and the safety notes, and write the coaching notes on each route page. Route pages show who reviewed them. New routes say so clearly until an instructor has signed them off.
Instructor profiles are coming soon.
How we grade routes
Grades come from the route itself, not a guess. Distance and elevation are measured along the route every 20 metres using OpenStreetMap paths and the Copernicus elevation model. Our instructors then check that each grade feels right on foot.
Difficulty and fitness
We work out an “effort distance”: the real distance plus 1 km for every 100 m of climbing. Fell runners have used this rule of thumb for decades. Very steep sections bump a route up to at least Challenging.
| Grade | Effort distance | Fitness needed |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | under 7 km | New to running or coming back from a break. Walking breaks are fine. |
| Moderate | 7 to 12 km | You can run 5 km comfortably without stopping. |
| Challenging | 12 to 17 km | You run regularly and are comfortable with 10 km or steep climbs. |
| Hard | 17 km or more | Experienced runner: long distance, big hills, or both. |
Steepness
| Steepness | What it means |
|---|---|
| Flat | Less than 6 m of climb per km |
| Gentle | 6 to 20 m of climb per km |
| Hilly | 20 to 45 m of climb per km |
| Very steep | More than 45 m per km, or sections of 20% or more |
Run at your own risk
Routes and grades are a guide. Conditions change with weather, tides and seasons, paths close for repairs, and cafés keep their own hours. Know your limits, tell someone where you're going on remote routes, and check the tide before going onto any beach. If you have a medical condition, talk to your doctor before starting a new training plan.
